Heart Investigations & Treatments

Cutting edge of treatment.

Dr Rosser is actively involved in research meaning that he remains at the cutting edge of treatment for patients. He has published articles leading scientific journals such as The Lancet.

Heart Treatments.

You may require one or more of these tests. See below for further details.

Investigations & Treatments

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An ECG is the most basic cardiac investigation and most patients will require one. It provides information on the speed of the heart beat and tells us if the heart is in a normal rhythm. It can also provide information on whether there has been any previous damage to the heart following a heart attack. Please see the video above for further information.

Echocardiogram (Echo)

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination of the heart. It provides information on the size of the heart, the pumping strength and examines the valves in the heart. Please see the video above for further information.

24 hour blood pressure and Holter monitoring

These small boxes are taken home and worn for 24 hours. They provide very accurate information on the speed and rhythm of the heart and small changes in blood pressure. Please see the video above for further information.

Exercise ECG (stress test)

An exercise tests examines what happens to the heart when you exercise. It can be used to find problems with the blood supply to the heart (coronary artery disease) or to examine if there are problems with the heart rhythm upon exercise. Please see the video above for further information.

CT Angiogram (CTCA)

A CT coronary angiogram provides information on the blood supply to the heart. It is performed following the injection of contest dye into the veins. Please see the video opposite for further information.

Myocardial Perfusion Scan (MPS)

A myocardial perfusion scan is sometimes referred to a nuclear scan. It assesses the blood supply to heart following exercise or an injection to stress the heart. Please see the video opposite for further information.

Cardiac MRI Scan

A cardiac MRI provides high definition imaging of the heart. It not only provides information on the structure and function of the heart like an echocardiogram but can also provide useful information as to why the heart may not be working as well as it should be and also the blood supply to the heart. Please see the video opposite for further information.

Coronary Angiogram

An angiogram is an invasive test perform with you awake. Most commonly local anaesthetic is injected over the top of the artery in the wrist or sometimes the groin and a small plastic tube is placed in the artery. Through this tube, longer tubes called catheters are navigated to the heart and contrast dye injected allowing us to see the arteries. The angiogram is a diagnostic test which examines the blood supply to the heart. If there are problems with the blood supply this can lead to angioplasty and stents. Please see the video opposite for further information.

Angioplasty and Stents

Angioplasty and stents are used to treat problems with the blood supply to the heart. It involves placing very fine wires through the artery in the heart, over which balloons and stents (metal framework) are placed to open the previously narrowed or blocked arteries. Please see the video opposite for further information.
